How The VW Poster Was Created:
I started the illustration of the VW Deluxe Bus by finding some good production photos and bringing them into Adobe Illustrator. After I created a stylized illustration, I then imported it into Photoshop and added a variety of textures to add interest/depth to the poster.

Why I Created a VW Bus Poster:
I’ve always loved these old VW Vans. I spent the better part of my college days daydreaming about owning one and traveling the country. To me, these Buses are more than just creatively engineered vehicles, they represent a freedom that only the open road can provide. After I graduated college I was finally able to afford one, so next time you see one of these vans rolling down the street, you might just see me behind the wheel!

History of The VW Bus:
Volkswagen started production of their famous buses in 1950 and since then have come out with five distinct style variations. For me, the ones that I loved the most were the first three styles, the Split Window (T1 Type 2) from 1950 – 1967, the Bay Window (T2 Type 2) from 1968 – 1979, and the Vanagon (T3 Type 2) from 1980 – 1992. The names of the first two styles (Bay & Split Window) refers to the differences of the front windshield, but I’m really not sure how the name “Vanagon” came about, but it feels appropriate for the 80s models. After 1992 the VW Buses became more like the domestic minivans we are used to here in the states, featuring a front engine bay. What Makes It Deluxe?:
A Deluxe Bus refers to the extra windows located on the rear corners and the top of the bus and an elevated trim on the exterior. There were two main variations of the Deluxe, the first version was in production from 1950 to 1963 and had 23 windows. From 1964 to 1967 the Deluxe bus had 21 windows.
The Deluxe depicted above is the 23 window version.

The window count is tallied like this:
2 windshields
2 front door windows (the wing wings and sliding windows all count as 1)
4 windows down the left side of the bus
4 windows down the right side
2 curved windows total on the rear corners
1 in the rear hatch
8 skylights in the roof (4 each side)

2+2+4+4+2+1+8 = 23
