FALLEN [on-going]
Forests play a crucial role in the environment; they serve as habitats for flora and fauna, source of livelihoods and mitigate global warming. Fallen probes man’s activities in the environment in relation to the rapid disappearance of forests and grasslands Nigeria. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Nigeria loses about 350,000 hectares of her forests to deforestation annually – that is almost the landmass of Lagos which is 367,100 hectares. Every year, millions of trees are lost with little efforts towards conservation and reforestation, this puts Nigeria in a serious environmental and climate crisis.

Nasarawa state (North-Central Nigeria) is experiencing deforestation at an unprecedented rate. The increasing population and sprawling urbanization in Nasarawa – FCT axis have led to the clearance of grasslands to cater to the housing and agricultural needs of the populace. The need for wooden products - majorly for construction - and illegal lumbering for export are also factors driving deforestation in across the state and the middle-belt region at large. In the same vein, energy poverty also fuels the felling of trees. Energy poverty describes a situation where people cannot afford or access clean energy services. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nigeria, over 70% of Nigerians depend on firewood and charcoal as their primary source of energy for domestic uses. The reality of this is that forests across the nation will keep diminishing if people cannot afford and access green energy sources. Forest degradation put Nigeria's biodiversity at jeopardy; exposes the Sahel region to desert encroachment; and threatens the lives and livelihoods of people and communities.

Lately, the effects of global warming such as extreme weather conditions are being experienced across the nation. Forests are important to mitigate the effects of climate change. Fallen as a visual narrative aims to increase awareness on this environmental issue and encourage everyone to take climate action by saving our forests.
