GIRLFANS is an project documenting female football fans. Created in 2013 by senior fashion lecturer Jacqui McAssey, her ongoing project is ‘intended to give female football supporters visibility and a sense of belonging in football culture‘.
Dotto was commissioned to design GIRLFANS UNTOLD—a publication featuring the experiences and recollections of nine life-long fans. Jacqui said, “It’s been so good to rep older supporters. Women who are often overlooked by their club, ignored by merch designers, essentially missing from history…”
The bespoke wordmark created for UNTOLD was inspired by the shapes and lines associated with the game through flags, markings and shirts. The colour palette echoes the fades and colour gradients of the original photography. The size of the publication nods to the old football programmes, but the simple, bold, colourful editorial was intended to feel like something different and ensure the fascinating stories of the nine women were the absolute focus.
The publication was a limited edition print run of 100 which have found their way all across the globe.
