Final Project
Color Paintings, Canvas and Acrylic Paint, 36x24" September 2019
Project Description
This project was a deiction af a battle between the paintings created in exercise 3. It was to use a larger canvas and I wanted to take the space provided to join the feelings of the previous assignment into an ambush scene.

Critique and Reflection
The markmaking in the background gave it a watery, ascending feeling. The colors, although similar and lacking high contrast, gave my peers the emotional response I was hoping for. If I were to start over, I would lay down the background across the whole canvas rather then attempting to paint around the shapes. I feel this would have decreased the halting effect. I als wish I had known that this project mimicked the previous exercise so I could have mixed up and saved pigments, as I feel the colors in Exercise 3 were more successful and vibrant.

Exercise 3
Space Through Color and Atmospheric Perspective
Color Paintings, Canvas and Acrylic Paint, 18x24" September 2019
Project Description
This project was two larger scale paintings that were assigned two opposing words for each painting that needed to be interpreted and represented. The constraints of this assignment were to use color and shape, each painting two unique shapes that contained differing sizes and color spectrum. The painting on the left depicted the words Anger and Rising, the painting on the right the words Torpor and Looping

Critique and Reflection
I feel very confident about the outcome of this pairing. My peers responded enthusiastically and used words that were or were adjacent to the assigned terms for the paintings. If I were to change anything I would layer more paint, as the paint I was using was on the thinner side and did not give the opacity I would prefer.

Exercise 2
Space through Value, Color and Atmospheric Perspective
Grey Scale and Contrasting Color Paintings, Canvas and Acrylic Paint, 9x12" September 2019
Project Description
This group of work was an exploration of color, value, and depth. The assignment was to create four paintings, two of which were greyscale, and two of which used contrasting colors, one with a cool background and warm shapes, the other with a warm background and cool shapes.

Critique and Reflection
The response I got on these was that layering of the shapes in the greyscale paintings would elevate the depth a lot. I agree with this and would change the size/locations of my shapes to create and overlap to imply depth if I were to change or redo this in the future.

Exercise 1
Value and Spatial Investigations

Grey scale paintings, Canvas and Acrylic Paint, 9x12" September 2019
Project Description
This group of paintings were an exploration of value and space using grey scale. The direction given was to create five paintings using rectilinear geometric forms, specifically with a 1:3 ratio. The breakdown was as follows: two paintings using overlaying shapes of identical proportions, two paintings using repeating shapes that decrease in size without overlapping, and a final painting implementing both concepts.

Critique and Reflection
I like the feelings of these paintings, I enjoy the repetiontikn and motion that was created from the constraints. I would change my order of painting if I were to replicate these and really focus on blending out the background on the fifth piece, and creating a full background on the others so there wasn’t any white spotting or haloing of the shapes.
