THINKING DEVELOPMENT is a post-disaster planning consultancy that was founded in 2010 to connect development specialists in London - including architects, engineers, urban designers, and videographers associated with University College London’s Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction - with a community of nuns, teachers and school girls in downtown Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Our mission is twofold: to pool our strengths and design and build a beautiful, sustainable, inspiring, and replicable multi-functional educational complex in the heart of Haiti’s capital city, and to document the process in short films that capture this unique journey and share its lessons with other development practitioners, other disaster victims, and all those with a passion for breaking down international barriers in the name of equitable and sustainable development. The main project at the present time is the reconstruction of the Centre Rosalie Javouhey, an all-girls school severly damaged in the 2010 earthquake.
The result of this design process is a phased plan for permanent reconstruction that increases the site’s capacity to 1,250 students, and allows students to stay in school while reconstruction happens. All phases of construction are designed to fit into an holistic long term plan that meets the needs of all site- users in accordance with our 6 design principles.
The masterplan is based on a simple, easily replicable classroom module. By using this regular and symmetrical module as the basis for the masterplan, we ensure that local construction workers improve their skills through repetition. Moreover, replicating a module within the site and elsewhere in urban Haiti allows for performance improvements and reduced costs with each replication.
This proposal costs and explains phase 1 of our plan. Phase 1 hosts the first 2 modules. Each module is 3 stories high with 2 classroom units per storey, solar panelling, rainwater harvesting and a rainwater storage tank. Both blocks connect with an external corridor, and there are 2 staircases. Phase 1 will create a total of 10 classrooms, an administration area and a staff room
