Game done during community game jam
Theme: "the game is a liar"
Usually on jams im the one responsible for both art and game concept so i tend to make story and character driven games to keep myself interested.
This time the concept wasn't my own and my part was more about assisting rather than directing so i'm going more in depth into the game dev and level design.
The game changed quite a bit from original concept to final product since a lot of stuff on paper proved to be unplayable in the game testing phase and since we were racing against the clock we had to change it as we went and be smart and efficient as possible. Keeping the core mechanics tight and simple and limiting the design were key.
once the game design part was done with we started to design levels since we knew that would be the main issue of the game. the prototype took about 4 days before it was playable so most levels were done "on paper". levels 0-3 are meant to introduce features so they are intentionally simple. once there was a working game we set up the levels and tested them. naturally most of the sketched concepts didnt work for various reason and were completely remade.
The last 2 images on the right are examples for a concept that didnt work and was redesigned during play testing:
asset animations with notes for coders:
mock animations for game intro and win\lose level. the idea was to make the most from existing assets and code. in the end it's up to the coders and time to what's doable so it's best to keep things simple.
work smart, not hard.
