Oba Spacefinder - Interaction

CMD Second year specialisation: Interaction
Case study

The Openbare bibliotheek Amsterdam (Oba) and the Hogeschool van Amsteredam (Hva) asked second-year students of CMD to increase the connection between the Oba and students / young adolescents.

Problem and focus
Students and young adolescents are not connected with the Oba.
My design puts the focus on a part of this large target group, namely
the students. During research I found that they have a problem
searching for a good study spot in the Oba.
Main insight research
The focus on this specific target group (students) arises from
the most important insight what was found during the research:

students come to the Oba to study, but they
have a hard time finding a suitable study place.

This is because of 2 reasons:
- They don't know if there is a spot free for them
- Some students want to work in a quiet space, and some in a noisy space
User flow
Above you see the steps the user in going trough while searching
for a nice spot to study in the Oba. The step highlighted in the darkest
red, is where the problem is.

The steps highlighted in red, are the steps that the design solution could
possibly come in. This is because in these stept the user is waiting, so
you can easily disturb them without them being annoyed by this.
Empathy map
To get a good overview of all the important insights of the target group
during research, I made an empathy map. Here you see what the
student is thinking, feeling, seeing, hearing, saying and doing while being
in the Oba. You also see their goals, behavior and expectations. In this way
there is more focus on what the student wants, and where the design
solution possible can come in and what is should be.
Solution: Oba spacefinder
With the solution 'Oba spacefinder', the study experience of the students
who come to the Oba will be improved, because they no longer have a
hard time with finding a suitable study place.

Oba also offers individual and collective study places, which separates
students who are looking for concentration, and a quiet place and
students who are looking for a noisy, relaxed working environment.
Inside Oba: Map of study places
Within the Oba at the start of the escalator and in the elevator, the
user sees a map of the 5th and 6th floors. This gives a overview of
the occupied and unoccupied study places.

See the images above for this.
Outside Oba: Reserve study place
The students can also view the map at home or on the road:
on the website. Through the website, the students that own a
Oba card, can also reserve a study place. The user puts in a
time that they wil arrive at the study place. When the user is late
(10 min. after reserved time) the study place wil be released for
other people. The study places can only be reserved for for that
day itself.
