Labor

“Without labor, nothing prospers.” – Sophocles

I am fascinated by workers. While many people’s work thrusts them into the limelight and garners them fame and fortune, I am more drawn to people whose work is rarely recognized or acclaimed – the road worker, the furniture mover, or the restaurant waiter, for example. I find myself wondering about the reasons behind their labour – do they work to support themselves and their families? Do they love the work? Do they see it as a calling? Or is the work they do merely a stepping stone on the road to other goals and dreams – and what might these be?
This exhibition is an ode to workers around the globe, especially those who toil for little monetary reward or recognition, whose labour is vital for the functioning of society.
