This school project was to design a new product for an existing brand for a third world country. The challenge was that it needed to be applicable to a first world country as well. I went with the idea to pursue a brand that was associated with water products.
I started by finding out what I was wanting to do with water, there is water clean enough to shower or bath in, and there is drinkable water that you can you use for dishes and food. I began to lean towards the water purification for drinking.
I then used a mind mapping tool to figure out what exactly people are needing and what actions and behaviors that would go along with someone who gathers water for part of their daily tasks. I wanted to choose a country that has many of the amenities of a first world country, I selected the country of India, because 82% of the population has electricity. Based on this information that I gathered, I chose the brand Keurig. their products do exactly what is needed to sterilize water. That is heating it up to boiling temperature, but requiring electricity.
Keurig was chosen because this brand because of its reliability and form factor, I wanted a product that could sit on the table or counter that could be as social as someone getting a coffee.
Above is my mood board for this project, I wanted to incorporate the people as well as the product description of what I expected to help and accomplish. It was important to me to have a visual representation of the things that I would want to include on my product. This would help shape what exactly I wanted my product to do and who it would be helping.
At this point I have entered the phase of sketching, I found the roles and functions that I wanted my water purifier to have. I had many different ideas as to how this water could be raised to temperature, but wanted to be sure that it stuck to the Keurig brand and form.
These were just some of the iterations that I came up with in this process, I was exploring what forms could do what and what device would work best for a general population of people. At this point, I had made a prerelease poster to show off what the company is doing to make an exciting new product that people would want to use.
These were the beginning stages of the final forms for my project.
These are notes on how it could work. It would pump water from a reservoir integrated in the product form factor that could fit the tank that would come with the product or on the edge of a fifty-five-gallon drum and draw from a larger source of water.
Once I was done sketching it was time to bring it into SolidWorks and rendered it in Keyshot.
With a tank that is integrated and a pump that can work from either the reservoir or a larger source of water, it is ideal with people who have electricity. This allows people share a positive experience matching the experience that Keurig is wanting their consumers to have. This product was not solely designed for a third world country, but for first world countries as well. Many people use and have the desire to have a water purifier in their home that heats up.
