Outdoor lavatory
Year:
2017
Project brief:
The brief for this project was to design two outdoor lavatories situated on Chapman's Peak hiking trail overlooking Houtbay and the ocean.
Location:
Chapman's Peak hiking trail, Chapman's Peak, Cape Town.
Project description:
My conceptual approach to this project circulated around geomorphology and idea of the 'context as concept'. For this project, I designed two parametric shells made of weathered steel that house a fully sustainable toilet frame contraption. The weathered steel shells represents the idea of the geometric birth of earth or a rock form attempting to mimic the forms prevalent in the context while contradicting the natural landscape in its geometric form.
The toilet contraption is fully sustainable in that, the urine excreted from the user will soak into the natural permeable floor created by the layering of small rocks and later be washed away by the rain and the feces can be excreted into a bag that fits into the contraption and dumped into a natural waste bin located at the start of the hiking trail.
Conceptual approach.
