According to William James philosophy of dress, clothing is a form of self-expression. The financial structuring of society is expressed through your attire. Even professional identities are also expressed through your attire, e.g., Astronaut’s spacesuit or Dr’s lab coat reveal their professional identities. However, we do not realize how much harmful Clothes can be for our environment.
The production of textile wastage is proliferating progressively. The waste production by the textile industry is getting the more grievous concern, especially in developing countries. According to NPR reports, from the Environmental Protection Agency, textile has one of the least recycling rates. They state that 15.1 million tons of textile waste were generated in 2013, of which 12.8 million tons of textile was discarded. As stated by, U.S. EPA that nearly 5% of the landfill is occupied with textile waste. EPA also reckons that approximately 3.8 billion pounds of post-consumer textile waste is recycled each year, which means that approximately 15% of post-consumer textile waste is recycled, vacating 85% in landfills.
In addition, textile production and waste are also affecting the environment and society. To protect cotton crops production, oodles of pesticide and herbicides are used which end up in the environment and turn it into a pesticide-intensive crop. Whereas synthetic or human-made fabrics like nylon and polyester, are made from petrochemicals and fossil fuels, also manufacturing them requires ample of water and energy. Additionally, greenhouse gasses are also created by nylon manufacturing, plus synthetic fabrics are not biodegradable.
I have come up with the idea of “AN ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE TEXTILE BRAND, WHICH UPCYCLES INDUSTRIAL WASTE INTO WEARABLE FASHION.”
P.S: All the brand collaterals are made out of eco-friendly paper.
