Cultural Center in Sedhiou

The main purpose of a cultural center is to provide people of Sedhiou area a comfortable and enjoyable space to transmit their centuries-old cultures to younger generations.

Instead of creating one large scale building, we decided to split functions to more human-sized areas that create intimate spaces in the middle of the city. Thus, we created room for both small, family-sized groups and those that need a scene to perform easily. The central part of project ground is a stage surrounded by a footbridge from the north-west side and a main building from the south. Both the footbridge and the balcony of the two-storey building have an additional function of a high level auditorium for the stage.
The two rectangular buildings on the south are designed as areas for exibitions and education. These functions can be easily transformed as all rooms are adaptable, with enough free space for other activities. The main entrances to the cultural center are provided from the streets, with a footbridge surrounding the marvellous tree and inviting anyone passing by to enjoy the view from the slowly rising terrace.
The architecture of rounded buildings is inspired by traditional African villages. Locally grown and harvested thatch is layered on top of the bamboo substructure, providing a low cost and sustainable building solution representative of traditional construction techniques. Clay bricks will be formed on-site by local villagers, enhancing the participation of the local community in the construction of the cultural centre.
The proper ventilation of buildings is provided by openings between roofs and walls. Air flow and sun amount can be controlled by blinds in windows.
To ensure the use of locally available materials, the main buildings use metal plates on wood for roofing. With the addition of bamboo gutters and reservoirs on ground levels, the area collects and preserves water effectively.
