Ray-Ban + Andy Warhol

The challenge was to create a conceptual ad campaign by inserting a modern product into a well-known painting. The product must look as if it was part of the original artwork.

PROCESS
I chose Andy Warhol’s screen-printed portraits of celebrities as the artwork, and Ray-Ban sunglasses as the product.
I started by selecting the portraits and went with Marilyn Monroe, Jackie O, Liz Taylor and Muhammad Ali as they were icons of the 20th century. Then, I searched for sunglasses that would look good on each portrait.

Through masking, adjustment layers, and filters I incorporated the sunglasses into the artwork. Once I had the composites ready, I brainstormed ideas for the tagline and went with “Dare to Pop” because it’s short, catchy and encouraging but also a nod to Pop Art, a movement lead by Andy Warhol.
For the typography, I chose Alternate Gothic No. 2–a sans serif font family designed by Morris Fuller Benton for the American Type Founders Company in 1903– for its robust but condensed style, which makes it easy to read without being overpowering.

I created a subtle 3D effect in Illustrator using complementary colors for each portrait, which adds a fun element to the design as a whole.
