Coconut is a publication containing “ The beauty of being British Asian ” a poem written by British born Asian, Nikita Marwaha. The aim of this project was to experiment with typography and storytelling.

Creative concept :

‘‘Coconut’’ was originally a racial slur used by other immigrants in reference to an individual who is brown on the outside but is white on the inside, much like a coconut. This is in regards to being raised in a typically white culture adopting western values on subjects such as relationships etc.

This concept can also be seen in the materials selected to create the book. However this publication is an attempt to reclaim the racial slur by celebrating the fact that the reality of being mixed race is that you get the best of both worlds. This is reinforced by the choice of poem. Each line of the poem features a comparison of the two cultures and the author expresses them proudly at the same time. The type is paired with my own personal photographs, some of which are related to the context of the poem.
