In celebration of Nam Hwa Opera‘s 55th anniversary, a commemorative publication that would accompany the anniversary dinner event was commissioned.

The concept of the publication is rooted deeply in the common Teochew saying “潮州人，家己人”—loosely translated to “Teochew people, our own people”—which makes reference to the strong bonds within the Teochew community. The important value that cherished and held in high esteem as it is believed that the sense of affinity creates a natural bond amongst the Teochews—both in the ancestral homeland and amongst the dispora—which has enabled the community to collectively progress forward. Nam Hwa Opera, a Teochew opera group founded with humble beginnings 55 years ago but now a well-established and well-respected traditional arts group in Singapore and regionally, is a testament of the value in action.
