Wolf Hunter, Altai (Russia)

Altai mountains, Siberia.

Today, hunting for the inhabitants of the Upper Altai remains as vital as a thousand years ago. This occupation is important not only for food and livelihood, but also for the preservation of their ethnic and historical identity. Countless wild animals inhabit these lands, many of which are listed in the Red Book, and their prey is strictly prohibited. This story is dedicated to Ermen. A licensed wolf hunter. Only in the fantasies of people far from the local realities the wolf has an image of a romantic independent animal, the hero of fairy tales. In reality, it is a pest whose population in this region has long gone beyond the norm and threatens many smaller animals, and especially livestock. In the Altai region wolves cause damage worth millions of rubles, so the state pays 3,000 rubles (45 $) for each skin. Now the wolf has become one of the most profitable hunted animals in these places. The cost of an adult individual is about 18,000 rubles. The meat of the wolf is used in food, and unlike bear meat it is considered very good and even healing. The skull of the wolf is most appreciated, its value fluctuates around 5,000 rubles. The fangs are bought separately, they are used in Chinese medicine (1000 rubles for one fang)
When he is not hunting and farming, Ermen likes drawing. It is amazing how versatile a human soul can be.
