One and Three Books: Memories of Telong

One and Three Books: Memories of Telong
(Memories of Telong is part of the Final Year Project done by Kong Qi Wei from Nanyang Technological University, School of Arts Design Media.)

From March 21 to April 22, 2019, the Cité du design Saint-Etienne is hosting the 11th edition of the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne, under the title ME/ YOU/ NOUS: Designing Common Ground. The exhibition One and Three Books has been invited to be part of the pedagogical mega-show Stefania.

The exhibition One and Three Books is the outcome of an ongoing research/pedagogical project led by Danne Ojeda at the School of Art Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Inspired by the artwork One and Three Chairs (1965) by Joseph Kosuth, it analyzes the relationship between the book as a concept, the book as a process (its making-off), and the book as an object of communication.

The 11th Biennale Internationale Design Saint Etienne is dedicated to the Chinese UNESCO Cities of Design: Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Wuhan; the Biennale celebrates the exponential growth of China within the international design scene. In this context, One and Three Books will exceptionally introduce a series of works having as a subject matter Chinese historical and cultural heritage in Singapore.

About the exhibition:
Publication: Memories of Telong

The book jacket is the illustrated map of Telong, with arrows pointing out to the specific locations and the page number of the stories, thus acting as the content page. Different papers are used for the different chapters according to the narrative presented. A darker and sturdier paper would represent the history and stability of the said venue. A thin paper would represent the fragility of the physical space. A smooth clear paper would represent the clarity of the memory told on the page. The paper choices are to reflect the content of the stories.

Together with the photos and memorabilia inserted, the textural experience with the different papers, the publication seeks to connect the reader to Telong and build a relationship through the stories told. The reader also explores Telong through memories and stories instead of the physical space.
