Single Family Residence

Architecture that endures is green. A lasting, environmentally responsible home must be three things: delightful, adaptable, and fundamentally energy efficient. To create a delightful space, we employ a modern yet timeless aesthetic that draws on universally admired qualities: ample natural light, thoughtful organization, a close indoor-outdoor relationship, and a strong connection between all spaces in the home.

Surrounded by cultivated corn and a predominately flat landscape, this house is intended as a hideaway for its owner and guests from the hustle of the city of Chicago. The home is intended to be true to its surroundings: the climate, the context and the community. The one story proposal is reminiscent of the traditional barn or shed with a twist. Separating the two living blocks in the center by the public gathering space allows for a fragmented series of relationships, unique to the fantastic views surrounding the site.

The public areas are arranged in an open floor plan emphasizing openness and light from the large floor to structure windows and clerestory penetrations. Deep roof overhangs at the perimeter of the central space allows for protection against the harsh summer sun while welcoming the tempered light from the winter. The mechanical systems include radiant floor heating and a ducted energy recovery ventilator. Emphasis has been made to allow for outdoor living through multiple exterior accesses from the public spaces along with the private bedrooms.

Sustainable designed elements:
- Passive Ventilation
- Clerestory windows for cross ventilation
- Sloped roof facing south for solar panels
- Rain water harvesting
- Sun Shading wood slats
- Radiant floor heating
- Gray water capture for sewage conveyance
- Environmental friendly materials: natural wood
- Recycled material finishes

- Water efficient plumbing fixtures
- Wind generator to capture the prevailing winds
