Shovels Up! is a personal statement on the recent worldwide sociopolitical status. For instance, reports shows an extreme increase of hate crime; a phenomenon that is becoming a trend. Interestingly, democratic and independent people voted and elected a sexist, homophobic and racist man as the US president. How inclusive is democracy then?
Trump can be the mascot that represents the relation between politicians and simple citizens. In addition, nonsense ‘#convefe’, twitted by Trump, reflects the awareness and the interest of politicians and societies for the common good.
Additionally, the poster is an answer to Trump’s Proposed Border Wall that, as he supports, it will control illegal immigration. How realistic is a solution to a problem if individuals are being treated like caged chickens? Can someone really coop up people who are chasing their dreams and they are fighting for their independence? Despite what we may think chickens are anything but silly. Research shows that they might be able to perform ‘mental time travel’. Therefore, even if people will be enclosed, any risk will be taken in order to free up themselves. If politicians build a large wall, plain humans can dig a large tunnel; in the exact same way that refugees in the Mediterranean inflated a boat.
It was such a great honour seeing ‘Shovels Up!’ hanging next to more than a hundred masterpieces by such talented designers from different parts of the world! Cyprus Poster Triennial jury chose my poster to be part of the exhibition under Borders (Cracks of Vanity and Cracks of Unity) category. The selected artworks, between the great record of 2500+ contributions, were hosted for the whole July 2019 at NeMe Arts Center, Limassol, Cyprus. Shovels Up was featured on 'Poster Monday' of PosterPoster website in 30th of September 2019
