One always perceives the circus as bright, happy, full of colour. However, one aspect we tend to overlook is the darker undertones that go behind putting up this cheerful show to impress and entertain people. The performers go through hardships, the animals are mistreated and the travel is gruelling. Essentially many of the people working in the circus are misfits in society and have found a place where they fit in.
This collection of capes draws inspiration from these darker undertones of the circus. The photos show the ‘behind the scenes’ feel of the entire grand show. Each cape has been screen printed by hand on raw silk and then constructed into the garment. Subtle and deep colours are used for a few capes and are balanced out by metallic tones on others. There are single colour screen-printed patterns along with one that is a four-colour repeat and one cape that has a two way print.
