PROCREATE PAINTINGS Summer of 2019

"Good Prospects"
Amelia at Mission Point north of Traverse City. I did a color pencil portrait from this pose about 8 years ago and always meant to create a painting. The lakes were at record lows that year and the beach had extended a quarter of a mile out from this boulder which would normally be in two feet of water.
"Eight Bells at Bailey Harbor Light"
Painting set in late afternoon after the light keeper has retired for the day.
We arrived just as the light keeper was closing up and he invited us in for a tour of the lighthouse.
"Spring Splendor"
A painting of a late blooming tulip that burst forth in my front courtyard in May.
"Spruce Forest Columbine"
We found this delicate columbine in bloom in the pollinators garden next to the ranger's station at Peninsula State Park in Door County. I finally had to lay down in the meadow grass to get the view I wanted.
"The Writer's Cabin"
We came across this picture perfect cabin near Eagle River and Copper Falls in the Keweenaw Peninsula. It made me think if the remote writer's cabin my dad was always dreaming of where he would be able to write his book. He never did find the right place to write, but this cabin would have enchanted him so I made it into a painting.
"White and Burgundy Surprise"
A quick painting between projects, this is my 20th painting in five weeks. Working in Procreate has tripled my painting speed. I am actually now painting to relax. This iris was at its peak in June.
"Dancing Pansies"
These pansies seemed to be dancing in the cool spring breeze in the the ceramic pots we keep in our front courtyard. Pansies have to be the happiest of all flowers.

"Painted Study of Hadrian"
I captured an image of this bust at the "Ancient Rome: Age of the Caesars" exhibition at Cranbrook's Science Museum this spring and decided to make a painting out of it.
After finishing this study tonight I decided to research Hadrian because his name was familiar, and I was reminded ironically, that he is known for building Hadrian's Wall, which marked the northern limit of Britannia in AD 122. The Romans just could not conquer those ungovernable Scots, so he stopped the conquest and built a 73 mile long stone wall. One theory for the building of the wall says "Hadrian's Wall was partly constructed to reflect the power of Rome and was used as a political point by Hadrian. Once its construction was finished, it is thought to have been covered in plaster and then whitewashed: its shining surface reflected the sunlight and was visible for miles around."
"Romeo and Juliet"
These two nasturtiums seemed to be engaged in a conversation. When I saw this view I thought of the yellow flower on the right as Romeo tilting up to call to Juliet high on the balcony.
