QX50 Japanse Born
In August 2018 GMUNK & Tool of North America crafted a cutting-edge projection mapping experience at the Concours d'Elegance car show in Pebble Beach to celebrate Infinti's Japanese heritage and its influence on the car's design. I was glad to be a part of this project from the pitch through production, getting to team up with an all-star cast including Chris Bjerre, Michael Rigley, Pieter Hergert and VT Pro.
Design Process
This project came together in just 5 weeks, which is impressive given the final output of 16,200 2k+ frames of CG animation. We used 3 virtual camera's that mapped out to 4 projectors focused down on the car covering the top, front and back wall allowing the all new QX50 to shine in it's glory. Cinema 4D was our primary CG tool and we rendered in Octane which worked well with the futuristic anime inspired aesthetic. X-Particles played a big roll in the multiple particle set-ups used throughout the piece. The octane / x-particles combo can be a bit of a head-ache with long animation sequences but we made it work and the end results turned out rad. Once rendered we brought our sequences into After Effects for the final edit, color correction, 2D overlays and compositing. As a design team we used the divide and conquer approach sharing tips and techniques along the way. Chirs B focused on the bamboo & light tunnel, Rigley made the blossoms, particle city & fieesh, I brought the sun, rain, & clay cracks, Pieter led the edit & 2D overlays and then GMUNK & I shot the thing.
