This is one of my earlier designs that I made in a class at Richland Community College and one of the first that I consider mostly successful.  The assignment required the students to certain effects and tools in Adobe Illustrator that ultimately required me to do some things that I would have otherwise left out, but the end result was a design that was appealing, if a little busy.
Another earlier design, the assignment was to find a product and then design a box based on that product.  I chose MP3 sunglasses and used the word from the Ancient Language for shadows as the product name. The language was created by Christopher Paolini for the Inheritance cycle.
I created this design to display and experiment with an idea a had for a logo involving a shark and the word Sharkbyte.  I wanted to explore the concept of combining the association of a shark with a powerful bite to computer software.  The natural extension of that idea led me to create a data compression software design including the CD front and a paper slip-cover with a CD window.
This design was what happened when three different inspiration sources came together.  I had recently done the design for the Moundford Mens' Ministries logo (background shape), there was a book I had read that had the Warrior Creed that I changed into this prayer, and I had an idea for how to make the realistic looking metal that I used for the rim of the shield.
The result is a poster design I'm very happy with.
This was the logo for a homeschool alumni camp event that I tried to get together.  The event didn't end up working out, but I'm still happy with how this logo looks.  I wanted to emphasize the wide-open feel of Illinois and the great view of the sky that you can get from out in the Illinois countryside.
This was a small (3" tall) promotional flyer that I made to promote the Prairieland Experience.
Title: Curiosity
This design started out as an experiment to see if I could make a realistic looking iris, from there I decided that I wanted to see how it would look with the rest of the eye around it, and ultimately I thought it would be fun to make just enough of a face to give the viewer hints of what kind of creature it could be.  I love thinking about what kind of face, head, and body could be home to that portion of face I created and think it effectively transmits that sense of curiosity to the viewer.
I wanted to see if I could render the sense of excitement and energy I get when I get inspired by a new idea.  I'm sure everyone will have a different interpretation of that sensation, but whenever I look at this design I get some of that excitement back.
