I was given a brief to create a magazine based on ‘consumption’. The name 'CAKE' was based around the idea of always wanting more than one slice and having connotations of greed. The content of the magazine focuses on media lies and how we as a society consume these lies so easily. The topics range from conspiracy theories to celebrity gossip. This was a group project, I created the front cover and contents page and focused on two topics within the magazine, which were conspiracy theories surrounding flight MH370 and Cat-fishing. The red within the magazine is risographed as red is the accent colour throughout, for it’s association with power. Within the magazine is a photoshoot which was a group effort, this is based in the middle of the magazine printed on red paper to resemble the jam middle of a cake.
This is an example of one page from our photoshoot included within the magazine. The apple is a metaphor for the media. Perfectly round, juicy and red - giving off the perfect exterior. We as an audience look at the media and become encapsulated with everything it tells us. We absorb it all because it has an exterior that appears genuine. All of the people in magazines and on instagram, look pristine and portray the perfect life. However, when you begin to look deeper, those models you see have been edited to imitate perfection not reality. This is where the apple starts to rot. The words written in front of the apple describe what the media truly is. A facade. A hoax. A mask.
