Urban Shelter for Itinerant Population

The project was developed throughout two main axis, Human Centered Design and Generative Design. The two methodologies were adopted because of the high complexity of the subject, this being a social and urban one. On diagnosis stage, it became evident the necessity to create empathy on the migratory phenomenon environment, as well as a shelter type of protection in which people can rest and develop a variety of activities, emphasizing on socialization and interaction.
From this point on, a decision was made to offer, not a preconceived idea based on standardized parameters, but a proposal that responds to the complexity of the situation, through a generative design method. This way the development of the product was overtaken by the application of an urban generative analysis method for the projection of social development projects. The product was an urban refuge that gets its characteristics as a result of a form finding process defined by an algorithm developed through the method, which is an organic figure determined human body movements which provides fluidity and different means of interaction.
Because the result is an urban mobiliary object, a concrete production is proposed, which was validated through stress simulation studies. Lastly, production alternatives experimentation was performed to sections of the product and lead to the conclusion that the refuge allows the combination of digital production methods with handmade production, which projects it to achievable reproduction under different circumstances making it possible to be built in many environments.
