Knight Foundation Infographics

In Feb 2013 I was happy to collaborate with VP+C on a presentation panel for Knight Foundation, showing the span and areas of their investment in its "Tech for Engagement" initiative.

The panels were organized in a 6 x 8 foot big "presentation book" displayed on a TED conference. Each inner spread represents one of four areas of investment. The areas are Building Social Capital, Deepening Engagement, Role of Technology and Unlocking Government. Concept for this infographics series is Universe. Each spread is a Universe of itself with planets rotating around it. Planets show the names of companies. Each company has satellites - a set of various information that tells us more about the company.

This was a very interesting and challenging project to do. There were loads of different kinds of information of all kinds to organize, as well as, sometimes, information missing. We had to organize it all in a coherent way. We chose the Universe system because it corresponded well with the content as well allowed us the flexibitly to move things around while keeping the same visual traits.

There are many "rules" we invented to make this representation easier. Every company was represented by, it's satellites are: a quote, definition, description and when possible series of images and statistical info. The size of the planets correspondents with the funding received. Around title on every spread there is a circular timeline showing the period of funding, color coded.

On this project I learned a lot about visual representation and extracting information, but as well - how much is it actually done because of the foundation, how big their impact is on the society and environment. Really a positive change!
