Erika Fraser's profile

Letterpress & Watercolour

From the first time I saw a letterpress business card years and years ago, there was no question that I would be designing and hand making my own wedding invitations one day. When Nate proposed last December, I have to be honest - my very first purchase was a press, and I started right away on the designs.
As always, every project has it's challenges, constraints, and opportunities. It was a must that our personalities would come through on the invitations, but we wanted to include some of our families personality and traditions as well.
Playful hand drawn elements mixed with the modern yet approachable Bariol font as well the classic and refined Baskerville Cryllic created the right mix for us. I imagine our wedding day will be a simialr mix of sentiments.
The celic heart knot was a nod to Nate's love for being out on a boat on the water (not suprising given he has quite a few sailors in his family). We have a lot more knots to learn before we're able to get out sailing...
Overall we cut and printed over 500 individual pieces and I was a bit sad to see them go one by one as we placed them in their envelopes and dropped off the box at the post office. But that only last a few days as we're already hearing from friends and family how excited they are to join us this summer and how much they loved our invites.

A big thank you to Boxcar Press without whom I would have never been able to complete this project. Thier wealth of information about letterpress, printing plates, ink etc. was what got me started, and finished with this project.
