On my travels through Australia between 09/2018 and 07/2019 I created a design for the Volkswagen T4 my partner and I were living in. The overall goal was to encompass Australian naturescapes and make it a truly Australian travel van. The design was developed on the computer in Illustrator.
One design shows the van parked on the sea floor on a reef rock, surrounded by fish and other sea creatures, entangled with the words “Home is where you park it.”
The other panel shows the other Australian landscapes reaching from dry deserts including famous Ayers Rock, to wet mangrove forests and swamps, filled with the respective native animals and the saying “Find a way to where the sky meets the earth.”
Then, the design was projected onto the van surface with a light projector in order to be traced with paint markers. When the job was done, we covered the surface with some layers of acrylic coat to make it fully weatherproof.
A few photos of the results:
A major part of our time was spent on fitting out the interior of the van. Aiming to use as much recycled wood as possible, we constructed a divider between the front and back, including a fold-up table and some hooks for clothes. Stove and gas bottle were fitted onto a shelf for the possibility to cook inside. The fridge, fan and kettle all run on the second battery which is hooked up to the solar panel on the roof. The camp windows and the rear window are fitted with curtains for privacy. Storage units underneath the bed provides enough space for clothes, food and electronics.
Sadly we had to sell our beloved van when leaving the country. However, we are glad to announce: We have found some good people to take care of our van and who will enjoy more adventures on this foreign beautiful continent.
