DERIVE Soundscapes

The DERIVE Soundscapes series is a suite of music inspired by the late-night wanderings of photographer Cody Ellingham on his travels through the cities of the world.

The project began as a short ambient soundtrack I did to accompany the above photo from his trip to Shanghai in 2018. When I first saw this particular image I told Cody I had the distinct feeling that I could hear the hum of the monolithic city just from looking at the photo.

I wanted to see if I could capture what I 'heard'.

This small idea morphed into the concept of DERIVE Soundscapes as we began asking the question: what does it mean for a city to have a sound?

As the series grew I followed Cody on his travels through cities around the world and attempted to match the emotion he captures in his photographs with my own take on what the city might sound like.

The series has since grown into a monthly radio broadcast of new music; Soundscapes Radio. Broadcast live from Deakin St coffee stand in Tokyo on the first Friday of the month. More information can be found on the Behance project.

If you like what you hear and would like to support the series please consider becoming a patron which gives you immediate access to high quality downloads and an exclusive podcast.
