When patients receive a cancer diagnosis, they often have a long road of treatment ahead of them. However, researchers are always looking for ways to make treatments shorter and more palatable for patients.

Results from a study concerning accelerated breast cancer radiation therapy were recently presented at the 59th annual meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology. The clinical trial found that radiation therapy after a mastectomy for high-risk breast cancer at intermediate stages can be shortened from five to three weeks.

This change maintained equivalent tumor control rates in both the breast and surrounding tissues after a five-year period. The study took place in China and involved 800 breast cancer patients who had undergone mastectomies.
