A winter look of the lake Myvatn
Lake Myvatn is placed in the northern part of Iceland and is one of the main touristic attractions in the area. Commonly known for its rich birdlife and its varied landscapes. While it's a very popular destination in the summer time, hardly anyone comes here in the winter. And that's when the true magic is happening.

The temperature in the winter stays below zero degrees for months, which would cause any normal lake to freeze. Well, the same thing happens with the Lake Myvatn, but only partially. Due to its geological features, it's never fully frozen. In some parts of the lake you can find hot springs with warm geothermal water, which appear in different shapes on the ice sheet forming unusual "pictures" seen from above.

The gallery shows some of the incredible forms I have captured - "painted" by pure nature. I have added some short captions to what I see in the particular image, but try to use your imagination and let me know what each image shows to you.

Being in the area in the winter time might sometimes become scary. Not only because of the permanent night at that time of the year. The lake shows it's powers in many ways.

During the night, usually in the most unexpected moments, it wakes you up letting you know about its existence. The loud sound of the cracking ice reverberates in all villages around.
