CiTR Radio & Discorder Magazine

CiTR Radio and Discorder Magazine are cultural institutions in Vancouver's independent music and arts scene. They are the city's go-to media outlets for alternative music, news and cultural coverage. CiTR’s mandate is to amplify marginal communities and to provide invaluable opportunity to spotlight voices on the fringes in an city that notoriously loves to vilify its punks, artists and rebels. This is where I learned to write about real people, for real people.
I worked at CiTR and Discorder between 2014 and 2017. At the radio station, I was the director of the station's flagship news program, News 101. I oversaw a team of volunteers who were working as producers, copywriters and reporters. I coordinated an hour long program every week, conducted interviews, ran audio software and soundboards, managed the show's social media. We also produced syndicated content for the National Campus and Community Radio Association, we interviewed would-be prime ministers, activists and community members to tell stories about Vancouver's communities on the margins.
I was also a photographer for Discorder magazine. I worked closely with the art director to conceptualize, plan and shoot and edit visual content for the magazine. It's here i learned to make things with duct tape and glue. No studio, use the abandoned warehouse down the street. No lights, pickup a bunch of black and white cork board and find some big windows. No budget? No rules. Make it, punk.
