Two of a Kind (2013)

Experiment #1 - "1+1=2" and "Incorporate movement" (20 minutes each)

Inês (left): "In this experiment, I decided to do several drawings inspired by the movement of two contemporary dancers. I was concentrated on the combination of the two individuals, without a loss of identity or a fusion of both. They were suppose to represent two figures and not one unique structure."

Joana (right): "For this set of rules, I decided to do a collage with a photograph of me and my sister hugging, the reason being because I was keeping in mind an action between two people that involved movement. Concerning the second rule, I thought it was interesting how it reminded me of how the combination of two people doesn’t lead necessarily to a fusion between them, since they still remain individuals with different personalities, which was the reason why I decided to do a cut in the middle of the two of us and reproduce repetitions of our images in separate directions."
Experiment #2 - "Present your notion of time" and "Use mostly the colour yellow" (15 minutes each)

Inês (left): "My concept of time is my own existence. I tried to portrait it by illustrating my movement through time. I got a yellow string, some needles and a world map to recreate my passage through the world in my 19 years of life."

Joana (right): "In this experiment I thought about my concept of time. I associate this notion with nature, with the idea that time never stops, things never stay the same, and our environment is always changing. Thinking about this led to me wondering about something which we humans find very frightening – death. Something that a particular animal doesn’t even have the time to “think” about. I am talking about the may fly, an insect that has exactly one day of life. I decided to draw an image of this insect, posing on a dead flower, opposing the ideas of life and death, while at the same time focusing on the colour yellow, which I used for the most part of the insect."
Experiment #10 (final experiment) - "The end justifies the means" and "Incorporate laughter" (16 minutes each)

Inês (left): "This time I was thinking of how people are always focusing on their futures, making plans and suffering constantly from anticipation of anything and everything, and not really enjoying their present situations. With this in mind, I decided to put a spin on a board game (Twister), trying to, in a way, ruin the game, by putting to the side it's enjoyable qualities that are intended for us to amuse ourselves in the present. So I created a game we're, by spinning the wheal, you find out what will happen to you in the future."

Joana (right): "In this experiment I was inspired by the way society points out every little difference in people to make a joke out of them, attract the public and make a profit. We can see this in today’s reality shows or even in some comedic shows who take advantage of certain aspects about people, like their weight, ethnicity or psychological problems. With this idea, I decided to work with a glove which I filled with pieces of journal to create volume and used duct tape in a way that would seem like the hand was pointing to the viewer. I also wrote some talking balloons to create that feeling of being teased by many people at the same time."
