Emerging UK Agriculture and Food Policy Post-Brexit and its Potential Implications
- Editorial Design
I was tasked with designing a publication for Con Lucey, on behalf of the Institute of International and European Affairs. This paper deals with the potential consequences for the agriculture industry in Ireland and the UK post-Brexit.
The language of the title (‘emerging’) and the topic of food / agriculture, suggested vibrant, colourful imagery.( shoots, growth.) However, it was noted during the design briefing that the article dealt primarily with financing and direct payments for farmers. I also needed to be careful not to have the illustrations look too "stock image like" with the combination of the growth / finance concepts.
I explored a number of cover concepts, including designs that featured cattle on the cover ( Beef, sheep, and dairy are the largest agriculture sectors in Northern Ireland ). However, in the long run, we agreed on an illustration concept that more closely conveyed the subject matter of the publication (the financial funding of agriculture).
My solution was a clean, elegant illustration, with money being the foundation or "roots" of a healthy thriving agriculture sector. I believe this design simply and effectively communicates the core concepts of Mr Lucey's paper. The bright colours are eye catching, without detracting from the serious subject matter of the publication.
