“The African Childhood”, is inspired by my own memories growing up in a little African country called Kenya in the 90’s and early - to - mid 2000’s. While living in the United States over the past nine years, I have met all manner of peo- ple and made the most wonderful friends, most of who are from different parts of Africa. One thing remains true; many children who grew up in the same time period as myself in Africa, regardless of tribe, nationality, or religion, all had very similar experiences. In my illustrations, I focus on showing ‘Innovations of African Children’. The two children are portrayed to be growing up in two different villages. The little girl plays with a large car tire, which acts as her ‘car’. In many areas, this kind of play was and still is a common thing. In the second illustration, I have depicted a young boy playing soccer. The soccer ball looks ragged because it has been made from scraps. Often times, especially on weekends and school holidays, children would walk around picking up old clothes, newspaper, and plastic bags from the polluted environment so as to make themselves a sturdy soccer ball all tied up with strong reeds or sometimes rope. Of course, there was a science to making the strongest soccer ball in an attempt to make it long lasting.
