SWEDISH CURRENCY
Five, Ten and Twenty-Kronor Bills

My father’s family came through Ellis Island from Vängsbo, Sweden in 1911. (My relatives who live in Sweden like to take genetic credit for my knitting skills.) I have visited Sweden and I think it is fantastically beautiful.

I couldn’t wait to begin when my Graphic Design III professor described this assignment. I knew I wanted the design to refer to knitting as Scandinavia has a rich handicraft history of knitting and embroidery. At the beginning I planned to photograph my own knitted pieces, but as I studied Swedish knitting books, I decided to use the patterns themselves as they are their own artform.

The scale of the pattern (5 squares across for the 5-kronor bill and so on) is a quick reference to know which bill you have in your hand. I chose buildings whose exteriors utilize a grid pattern that relates to the grids of the knitting patterns.
