Learn How Tissue Paper Is Made

Tissue paper is a super lightweight paper made from recycled pulp with a soft and fabric-like feel. There are various kinds of tissue paper including facial tissue, paper towel, wrapping tissue, toilet tissue, and others. The process of making tissue paper varies from how regular paper is made. It goes through processes including pulping, pressing, and converting like regular paper but with some changes.

Understanding tissue paper processing

Pulping

After logging trees, they are cut into chips grounded into fine flakes before soaking and retting them. Paper pulp comes from wood fiber and recycled materials. The retted flakes are stirred in a mixing tank filled with water and mixed with chemicals including limestone and sodium sulfide. These chemicals are for softening, coloring, and strengthening the paper.

Pressing

The pulp is poured uniformly and consistently on fast moving porous belts driven over steam-heated drums. The remaining water in the pulp escapes through the belt pores for the remaining fibers to form a delicate fabric. This tissue is transferred to a heated roller to become instantly dry. The fabric is transferred to a core forming a large diameter roll. Adjusting the roll draw speed allows getting the appropriate tissue thickness before forwarding it into the converting machine.

Converting

It involves splitting of tissue plies and passing them through the embossing roller to soften the tissue and for creating decorative patterns on the colored tissue paper. Plies are put together with glue before perforated by doctor blades to make pulling the sheets apart easy. The tissue is then turned into flat surfaces or wounded around cardboard to make cylindrical rolls. Winding machines make rolls in different sizes and sheet counts while large rolls are cut by a rotating doctor blade into smaller rolls.

Uses of tissue paper

Since tissue paper comes in various textures and thicknesses making it appropriate for various purposes. You just have to pick tissue paper with properties to suit your requirements including:

Facial tissue
Toilet tissue
Packing tissue
Paper towels
Table napkins
Hygienic tissues
Acoustic disrupters

Acid-free tissue paper vs. standard tissue

Processed paper without agents is acid-free unlike regular tissue paper made with agents with a possibility of becoming acidic over time. It makes acid-free tissue paper the best for storing items including crockery, jewelry, antiques, and fabric. Keep in mind that both types of paper have particular purposes they are better suited for.

Acid-free paper is more suitable for delicate items while regular paper is used for various purposes including wrapping bottles, general wrapping, filler for gift boxes and gift bags. Tissue paper is a wonderful idea to brighten customers’ unboxing experiences. It adds extra excitement to gift recipients. This paper comes in various colors making it suitable for various occasions including Christmas, weddings, and birthdays.

Crepe paper vs. tissue paper

Made from similar materials, crepe paper and tissue paper go through different manufacturing processes. Crepe paper is tissue paper with a thin adhesive layer applied on tissue paper before scraping with a blade to create a gathered crinkled effect. Crepe paper is used in crafts and for backing various types of tape such as electrical tape and masking tape.

Properties of tissue paper

Caliper

This refers to a measure of the tissue paper thickness. The density of paper is not easily determined except when measured with a caliper. The caliper of tissue paper is the same for different brands since there is usually less variation in thickness. The standard unit of measurement for tissue paper caliper is micrometers.

Tissue paper brightness

Tissue paper can come in any color and this optical property is measured to align with indoor and outdoor color lighting conditions. Manufacturers usually meet international standards while making tissue paper. There are various standards for each type of tissue paper regarding brightness. It is obvious that single-ply paper has different brightness compared to multi-ply paper.

Paper appearance

The most important aspect of tissue paper is its appearance. Everyone has personal requirements when selecting the right appearance for their tissue paper. To storeowners, it is very important to choose tissue color with an appearance that your customers will love. Everyone is less likely to use less appealing and unattractive tissue paper with a range of better options available.

Basis weight

This is the measure of the amount of mass for each unit paper area. For tissue paper, basis weight refers to its weight compared for a particular number of sheets. This is usually 480 sheets for tissue paper of a given size while a ream usually has 500 papers.

Conclusion

For anyone looking forward to using tissue paper for your various needs, the information above comes in handy. It is very important to understand the options of tissue paper available with related properties and purposes. In addition, you can order tissue paper to meet your needs with a chance to customize it with your brand logo.
