After seeing a shelf constructed from metal piping, I was inspired to employ the same materials in my construction of the demi-picnic coffee table. I had previously sketched out a design of what I thought would be my ideal coffee table, and my resulting efforts closely match my original design. Prelimenary designs called for a main surface of ample height and width to sit two people crosslegged and comfortably without coming into contact with a desired storage space. The "book balcony" is a storage space that is meant to be visible but out of the way of crossed legs and a main suface. It functions as both a display and storage for those who like to show off their coffee table books and trendy magazines. The slanted legs beneath the main surface and lowered book balcony take the appearance of a picnic table cut in half, hence: demi-picnic (half picnic).
