“Da Bian Gu (Beating the side of a drum)” is a folk adage which means being a sidekick for someone by helping someone or something with sweet-talking or doing something to assist. An idiom with similar meaning is: attack by innuendo. But different with it, “beating the side of a drum” is more of a positive, commendatory, relaxing and active way.

Da Bian Gu-DBG(beating the side of a drum) is a sub brand of an art institute of “Da Bian Lu-DBL”, and at the current stage they are hoping to do more work in education and communication of children art education.

Beating the side of a drum is different with drum beating, for that it is not beating the center of a drum, and making the loudest noise. It’s may not be the core of a music, because beating the side means smaller sound, less power and less importance. This way of beating is for emphasizing the most important drum beat on the one hand, and on the other hand, it starts from the side but will be slowly entering the center. The sound of the drum beating gradually gets stronger, which implies a process of learning and making progress.

Da Bian Gu-DBG(beating the side of a drum): beating the side of a drum, if with your eyes closed, maybe you will find about the form of a drum during beating on the side. Maybe it’s not a round drum. Maybe it’s square or ellipse. You can only find out during beating the drum, and you can only get to the entirety by beating on the side, and then from the entirety into the center. The relations between boundary and center, node and entirety, is a process looking from boundary to the center.

The form of the Da Bian Gu-DBG is designed as a non-stop moving and changing from which is integrated by blocks of softness, no boundary and no certainty. It’s like feeling the boundaries of things with images. We tried to express a sound behavior of beating the side of a drum, searching for the boundaries with soundless images.
