Future Cities
"what does it mean for a city to dream?"

Born in the megacity of Tokyo, Future Cities is a new kind of shared experience that uses light and sound projections to explore the world.

Future Cities is a new interactive experience melding 3D photogrammetry techniques created by the Derive team. The images of the city are combined with a hypnotic soundscape to create a fully immersive fly through of a city that people can explore at their own pace. We stepped back, handed over the controls and let the viewer wander to their heart’s content.

'Future Cities' is a project born in Tokyo in 2018 with the idea of exploring the shared memories of the world's cities. The team, Photographer Cody Ellingham, 3D creator Ruben Fro, and soundscape artist SJF, wander and scan places using a process called photogrammetry, turning images and video into ‘point clouds’.

Each place is uniquely scanned to tell its story and then the 'point clouds' are assembled together to create a dreamlike interactive experience that is projected onto buildings or in gallery spaces. “It is as if you are swimming through a dream of a place deep underwater,” Cody describes, “some of these buildings are already gone and they only exist in memories now.” The real-time aspects of the show combined with the immersive music creates a powerful experience that leaves audiences mesmerized.
“The work has been incredibly well received, we have had people staying for hours at our shows exploring this world we have created. By combining dreams of places and memories we give a glimpse of their city as they have never seen it before.”

The most recent edition of Future Cities came to New Zealand to transform the Hall of Memories at the National War Memorial in Wellington. Taking the audience on a conceptual journey from forgotten forests to impossible cityscapes, combining memories of the past and the future through 3D photogrammetry and immersive audio.
