Hundstage (dog days)
On 23 July the "Hundstage" begin, a mostly hot fair weather period. It is named after the dog star Sirius, which rose and set 3000 years ago in this time with the sun. Already the ancient Greeks and Romans made Sirius responsible for the hot days, the illnesses connected with it, the drowsiness and lethargy. The "Hundstage" should be bad for business and the stock exchange. In most places, work is avoided in this hot time if possible.
Good Friday and Pietà
In the fine arts, the Pietà is the representation of Mother Mary with her dead son Christ taken from the cross. The devotional picture serves to turn towards compassion and the suffering of Christ on the cross. According to tradition, Christ was taken from the cross on Friday evening at the time of the evening prayer (Vespers), which is why there is also the expression "Vespers picture". Good Friday falls in the period from 22.3.-25.4., since it is directed towards Easter, the Sunday after the first full moon of spring.
Michaelmas and Thanksgiving
The archangel Michael is known as the conqueror of the devil in the form of a dragon. He is the guardian of the gate to paradise and weighs souls in the Last Judgement. September 29th is Michaelmas Day. It is the time of the markets and harvest festivals, and earlier that day the evening work began with artificial light, which is still preserved in a saying: "The Michel lights the light".

St. John's Night
St. John's Night is the night before the birthday of John the Baptist on 24 June. It is closely connected with the solstice on 21 June, which in antiquity fell on 24/25 June. For luck, love spells and to ward off demons one dances around a fire or under a wreath with candles. You tie bouquets of 7 herbs or gird yourself with mugwort. In the Christianization, the pagan customs were unsuccessfully abolished and the Midsummer Festival was later replaced by St. John's Day.
