Chemical Grade Alumina Continues to Rise

The chairman and CEO of New Day Aluminum, LLC, David D'Addario possesses 30 years of experience managing metals manufacturing and aluminum recycling businesses. Under David D'Addario’s direction, New Day Aluminum recently acquired the Noranda Alumina company based in Gramercy, Louisiana, for $24.4 million in a competitive auction.

Drawing raw materials from its bauxite mine in St. Ann, Jamaica, Noranda Alumina produces smelter grade alumina and chemical grade alumina. Smelter grade alumina is used in the manufacturing of aluminum metal, while chemical grade alumina (CGA) has a variety of industrial applications.

For instance, CGA is a raw component used in various types of polishes, paints, abrasive cleaning products, building materials, LCD glass materials, and even toothpaste. One form of CGA, called aluminum hydroxide, can be used as an aid in the water purification process.

A commonly used material worldwide, total global production of CGA reached 7.22 million tonnes in 2017, according to the International Aluminium Institute. The 2017 total represents a growth in CGA production of nearly 1 million tons over 2016's output.
