Experimental Photography Case Study:
Daniele Buetti

Daniele Buetti is a contemporary Swiss artist who uses and incorporates a range of media such as photography, light installations, drawing, and sculpture in his works. Working with the different mediums, he is able to create powerful, thought-provoking artworks that he uses to communicate to the audience, often about issues in today’s consumer society.

Light
Using perforated photographs placed on top of light boxes, Buetti is able to create these interesting and magical works. “Light, no doubt, is the most seductive and the most magical of all the media,” he said. Knowing that we are easily fascinated and captivated by light, he uses light to catch viewers’ attention and bring them closer to the works and take a closer look.

This technique can be adapted and applied in various campaigns to create interesting, eye-catching
and effective graphics that can also convey a message.

Mirrors
In one of his more recent exhibitions "Are you talking to me?", Buetti cuts out the face from a portrait of a famous person and layers the image on top of a mirror, to create a portrait where the subject is merged with the viewer. The aim of this is to highlight the society's obsession with beauty as well as its unhealthy relationship with celebrity culture, by letting viewers put themselves into the portraits of well-known celebrities such as Princess Diana and Elvis Presley.

This technique can be adapted and used in many campaigns to add a layer of depth, and possibly to help convey the message better or further. Using mirrors can also help create an interesting effect that can include the viewer or environment.
