Masters of the Illustrated Film Poster Make a Creative Entrance to this Year’s San Diego Comic-Con 50

San Diego Comic-Con is back this July 17th-21st, 2019 celebrating 50 Years of SDCC.  At this year’s event eight movie poster illustrators will be attending an anniversary panel like none before! On Friday July 19th, 2019 1-2 pm (Room 23ABC). Stephen Kramer Glickman will be hosting the panel with movie poster artists/illustrators Steve Chorney, Jason Edmiston, James Goodridge, Rory Kurtz, Robert Rodriguez, Paul Shipper, Akiko Stehrenberger and William Stout.  ASIFA-Hollywood and famed illustrators who have worked on entertainment art for the last 50 years will discuss their craft and what inspired them to pick up the baton and follow in the footsteps of their mentors. Steve Chorney stevenchorney.com 

Steve Chorney entered into the visual arts in the 1970s when he designed and animated television commercials. Moving into freelance projects, his movie poster design for ‘Lassiter’ which led to his career illustrating over 50 TV Guide advertisements, his illustration work for ‘Designing Women’ earned him The Hollywood Reporter Key Art award for television. Steve has painted many illustrations for State Tourist attractions, studio parks and resorts, magazine covers and books including the Star Wars young readers series. He has worked on nearly 200 motion picture campaigns including designs for Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, working on projects for Disney, MGM, Universal and Warner Bros.

A commercial illustrator and painter since 1996, Jason has created work for advertising, editorial, packaging and book publishing clients. He is a traditional artist, painting in acrylic on watercolor paper and wood panel, but also works digitally, usually mixing the two mediums when working on movie posters. He has been influenced mainly by a number of well known artists from over the last 100 years, specifically Frank Frazetta, Norman Rockwell, Earl Norem, Norman Mingo, and the Hildebrandt Brothers. Jason, like those artists, often works in the world of pop culture, such as collectable screen printed movie posters, DVD and vinyl album covers as well as toy packaging and advertising.

James Goodridge began his illustration career in London. From book covers to films, for over 30 years James has been involved in numerous motion picture campaigns and has completed illustrations for advertisement inside and outside of the art and entertainment industry. He works in pre and post-production illustration creating art and concept sketches for television and films (Batman and Robin, Band of Brothers, Lord of the Rings series, and Harry Potter series. James has further developed his art to showcase historical subjects from the time of the Mexican Revolution and of the Buffalo Soldiers who have ‘untold stories’ and are underrepresented in art exhibitions and galleries.

Rory Kurtz is an illustrator and artist living on the shore of Lake Michigan in America’s Midwest. Focusing in pencil, ink, and digital paint, Rory has carved out his niche as a unique voice in the illustration community. Each of his pieces are individualistic yet share a sense of fantasy in a modern reality. His work can be seen regularly in publishing, editorial, and advertising around the world.

Robert (Bob) Rodriguez Phd began his freelance art career when he graduated from Chouinard Art Institute in 1969; and received an honorary doctorate in 2019. His illustrations are widely seen from breakfast time with the famed Quaker Oats image to buying your USPS stamps. Bob’s style ranges greatly from 1890s French posters to 1930s Art Deco and 1950s pinups. These vibrant and stylised era illustrations are well shown in his ‘Cinco de Mayo’ artwork, a series for the Cowboys of the Silver Screen, posters for theatrical productions and motion picture campaigns for The Jewel of the Nile, The Two Jakes and City Slickers 2.

Paul Shipper is a freelance illustrator best known for creating illustrated Key Art for the entertainment industry, cover art for magazines, books and music albums, and illustrated motion picture studio campaigns including work which have included Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Paul draws inspiration from the illustrated film posters of the golden age, including Masters; Drew Struzan, Richard Amsel and Bob Peak. He has embraced digital painting along with his traditional art background utilising the latest tools and delivery methods whilst staying true to the aesthetic he loves.

Akiko Stehrenberger graduated from the Art Center College of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration in 2000. She is both art director and illustrator on her projects and works from concept to illustration and type layout. Akiko works with directors, movie studios, advertising and movie advertising agencies. Her many accolades include awards for movie poster design and illustration, and earning 12 CLIO Entertainment awards since 2012.
William Stout williamstout.com 

William Stout was destined for Los Angeles when he was born on route in Utah. He attended the Chouinard Art Institute and began his art career in 1968 with the cover of Coven 13. ‘Bill’ went on to produce illustrations for movie campaigns (Wizards, 1977) and was involved in film production design for a number of films including Buck Rogers, the Conan films, First Blood, Masters of the Universe, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Prestige. His paleontological drawings and Antarctica wildlife illustrations were in the touring exhibitions ‘Dinosaurs Past and Present’ and ‘Dinosaurs, Penguins and Whales – The Wildlife of Antarctica’ viewed by millions internationally and acknowledged by Michael Crichton as inspiring his book Jurassic Park.
