SURF PLAYING CARDS

This deck was designed last year while i was leaving Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) to spend some time in Madrid. From a surfers island to a crowd european capital.

I was homesick and when the client Riffleshuffle.com asked me to think about a new idea after the success of the previous Skateboard Deck, the choice has been easy.

I decided to create a surfboard deck and putting all the memories, feelings and people i’ve met on the island.

COURT CARDS

It’s been easy to imagine 12 different surfiest characters for the court card.

Surfing makes all different kinds of people come together and share their common interest. So on the same beach you can have the cool guy, the rasta, the youngster and the old man, the wise shaper and the yoga guy, the posers and the BBQ lover.

Like it happened to me, everyone can find among them a character who is similar to a surfer friend, or another to identify with.

Kings: they are adult and relaxed. Many of them are now shapers or lonely surfers. Some love Yoga and meditation and healthy vegetarian food.

Queens. In order: Queen of posers, Queen of fun, Queen of "duck dive" (the action to get over a breaking waves), Queen of wax.

Jacks: they are younger and passionate. They break their boards and love unhealty BBQs. Some have dreadlocks and others are just posers...

ACE OF SPADES

The Ace of Spades is one of the most important iconic card and i had to figure out a cool design with surf elements and a spade shape.

So i decided to use the surfboard nose and 2 tentacles

holding it tight as the surfer who loves his board.

BACK DESIGN

This has been the hardest element to design.

The trick is create a complex composition of the most iconic elements of surf life trying to use all the already designed elements that can be found inside the deck.

This composition has to be funny and vibrating like surf mood but also perfectly symmetric and balanced, so as not to tire viewer eyes.
