UNIQUE FORMAT CONTEST HOSTED BY DCGLOBAL SKATE TEAMS GIVES AMATEUR SKATEBOARDERS CHANCE TO CLAIM “KING OF…” CROWNON THE STREETS OF LOS ANGELES
DC’s King of Los Angelesevent is only weeks away from its official kick-off on June 19, 2007. In one ofthe most unique amateur contests around, DC is giving unsponsored skateboardersthe chance to be crowned DC’s “King of Los Angeles.” Entrants compete in fourseparate events at some of L.A.’s best spots to gather points and claim thetitle along with over $10,000 in cash and prizes. The three-week long eventcombines the four amateur skateboarding contests with a team trip that includesDC team members from the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia to create one ofthe largest events for DC Skateboarding since The DC Video Premiere Tour in2003. The DC King of L.A. will be the first of three stops, as the series thentravels to Barcelona and Sydney in late 2007.

The DC King of L.A. will begin on June 19, with a DC Team demo at Active, andconclude with the final DC King of L.A. skate contest on July 7 at Los AngelesCity College. Contests will be held at some of L.A.’s most infamous skatespots, including Lockwood Ave Elementary School, Hubert H. Bancroft MiddleSchool, a replica Chino Hills 4 block and replica Wilshire 10 stair rail. Forthose spots that didn’t get approved for skate contests by the City of LosAngeles, DC is working with builder Jeff King to create exact replicas ofL.A.’s notorious skate locations.

DC’s worldwide skate team members will descend on L.A. to take part in theevent. Joining Danny Way, Colin McKay, Rob Dyrdek, Josh Kalis, Ryan Gallant,Brian Wenning, Ryan Smith, Lindsey Robertson, Devine Calloway, Greg Myers, andSean Malto; will be Canadian

DC’s inaugural King of… Event began in New York in 2006. The contestlaunched successfully across New York’s five boroughs. Culminating at Manhattan’slegendary Brooklyn Banks, The DC King of New York contest called on amateurskateboarders from all over the city to do battle for the coveted DC King of...title.
Vincent Alvarez from West Covina, CA won the fourth and final DC Kingof Los Angeles Skate competition at Los Angeles City College Saturday, which also secured him the overall King of LA title, taking him home agrand prize of of $5,000 and a custom video iPod.

Overall, the DC King of Los Angeles Skate competition drew a strongfield of skaters from across Southern California across its four stopsin the the last two and half weeks.

“What Hollywood is to the entertainment industry, Los Angeles is toskateboarding,” said Jefferson Pang, DC Brand Manager, East CoastSkateboarding, “LA is the epicenter of skating.”

The final DC King of Los Angeles stop pitted 25 skaters fromparticipating LA-area skate shops against 25 skaters who qualified inan open competition.   About 125 skaters took part in the opencompetition between 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon.

The highlight of the day was the finals -- In addition to determiningwho would win the event, the overall DC King of LA title was on theline.   Alvarez, Keelan Dadd from Palmdale, Chris Mendes of MorenoValley and Josh Grossguth from Lancaster took the top four positions.

The real battle was between Grossguth and Alvarez, who came into thefinal stop as one and two in total points after the first three stops, with Grossguth leading by three points.  After the final, however, theywere tied in the overall points standings, forcing the judges todetermine the tie-breaker.  They huddled for at least 10 minutes beforedetermining Alvarez the overall winner thanks to his two first-placefinishes to Grossguth's one.

Vince Alvarez was a crowd favorite during the fourth event and tookhome bragging rights as the King of LA skateboarders.  After it wasover, he said, “right now I’m tired but I feel very good everyone likedthe skating today.”

Grossguth was clearly disappointed that he did not win the crown but said, “Overall it was a fun today.”

As with previous DC King of LA stops, the DC Team Pros were on handincluding Danny Way, Devine Calloway, Ryan Gallant and Colin McKay.

At the end of the day DC Team Manager Heath Brinkley said, "the levelof skating exceeded our expectations.  It is good to see the number ofpeople coming out and very exciting to see that a new skater like VinceAlvarez can pop out of nowhere."

King of Los Angeles was modeled after last September's DC’s King of NewYork Skate competition and next up for the series will be the King ofBarcelona Competition coming in September followed by a King of SydneySkate Competition near the end of the year.  .
