Van build Australia

How to build a Tiny House on wheels
by Niklas + Antonia

In 100+ pictures, step by step
I bought a Toyota Hiace 2004 Commuter 3.0 Diesel with 182.000 km. It had a lift for disabled persons and 13 seats in total.
we ripped it all out get the most space possible to fit a bed, kitchen and storage
fully insulated the van with 90 mm Rockwool and connect a vapour barrier on, to protect the wool to build up moisture - that would slowly rotten your van
I made a template for our wall the separates the van into living area and driving cabin.
As soon as we finished the wall, we started to build some structure for the pine linings.
bought heaps of pine linings and screwed them onto the wooden structure that we previously build. We also raised the floor a few millimetres, because we couldn't get rails for the straps out.
we build in two led spotlights, which wires we ran into the corner next to the wall to our secondary battery system. Extra storage was cut with a jigsaw and sanded of all pencil marks.
under the bed platform are two drawers 1,80 m which can be extend two thirds of the whole length safely. They do slide on thin strips of pine board and prevent of tipping over with two as well. The drawer box is held also sideways with come construction timber.
the kitchen was planned and we begun to build the first drawer which will contain our cooker and pans. To save weight we build the kitchen mostly out of 12mm structural plywood.
our friend Eton came around ( only met Eton for 10 minutes during a chat, texted him and he came around the same day! ) and wired the whole sucker up. That means he connect the secondary battery, fuse box, solar panel regulator, 12 v downlights and our Inverter. And this only in a couple of hours ! I can't thank you enough Eton, the nicest Kiwi I've ever met :-D
the basic structure of the kitchen was build in and we finally had light !
we took the kitchen out again to arrange the sink and water tab
cutted and edged the kitchen tops out of 16mm Melamine boards and screwed them on. In the meantime we took the leftover pine linings and build the floor. After that we build the drawers for our fridge and cutlery.
I had to make drawer fronts and side panels that enclose the bed platform. Antonia levelled them out and pin nailed and glued the fronts on.
the work on the kitchen continued as we cutted the doors and hinghed them in place.
to reach the last part of the bed drawers we cutted the the top to get access from the inside of the van. Afterwards we putted a pine trim around the edges to make it nice and neat.
Antonia sew all the curtains by hand and designed the coat hangers, build them later on.
we switched workshops and started to sand it all before we applied 2-3 codes of clear varnish.
replaced the floor with a much more durable surface than pine boards.
bought a trade rack second hand - had to cut and weld some pieces and attached the solar panel with rubber under it to prevent retelling while driving.
placed the roof rack on the allumium crossbars and hose clamped it down
build an outdoor shower pipe with a pressure valve - painted it black so it heats up itself
these are couple before and after shots, mostly hiding ugly spots
we wanted some plants in the van so we build a few trays that are holding jam glasses
for the shower we made some curtains and build a PVC platform which can slide in/out

Here are the final pictures, enjoy :)
