It would be simple enough to illustrate with a model, a diagram, or even just a napkin doodle, what a camshaft does inside a gasoline engine. The goal of this exhibit and works-like model is to illustrate not only the function of a camshaft, but why we as humans developed the mechanism. Why use a hard-to-manufacture camshaft when slider or lever would do?
