Stamford TOD RFP - 1st Place

Team: Studio V Architecture, Zongye Lee, John MacCallum
ACCESS & TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

Design features include a direct elevated and landscaped pedestrian link to the station and railway platforms. Pedestrian oriented street frontages are activated by shops and restaurants with human scaled streetscape and sidewalk treatments.
COLLAGED GROUND PLAN

The challenge was to maintain the daily functionality of the station while upgrading the infrastructure and constructing the new buildings. The parking requirements played a big role in this, and the phasing plan had to be planned in such a way that commuter parking would not be compromised during the built out period. The first step was to relocate all existing parking lots from Station Place to the new South State Street garage, before performing upgrades to the existing structure.
The buildings engage the city through a potentially rich and diverse program of uses. In addition to office and parking, these include a signature two story restaurant with outdoor terrace dining targeted to a celebrity New York chef, a 500 seat multi-purpose auditorium and break-out space suitable for performance, conferences, and diverse events with street access, and a state of the art gym and health club. Additionally, there are green areas including terraces and a roof garden, as well as street level retail including cafes and bars, ensuring an active and engaging environment at all times of day.

APPROACHING ALONG MANHATTAN ST.

The articulate design of the buildings is intended to reflect on its varied use within, while maintaining a consistent and elegant glass veil. The intention is to create a gateway into Stamford by making a bold iconic beacon recognizable on the city’s waterfront.
SIGNATURE ATRIUM

A primary feature of the building and public space of the tower is a vertical green atrium that could run the full height of the building. Flaring at the base to accommodate retail and street level uses, as well as larger trading floors, and curving inwards at the top, it creates a striking and memorable "curtain of glass" and a shimmering transparent veil to the office floors and vertical green gardens within. Special office functions including conference rooms, meeting and lounge areas, and executive office suites can cantilever into and over portions of the atrium to provide social spaces for interaction and special places within the vertical greenery of the soaring atrium. The atrium will also create a vertical space for air movement to integrate the latest passive and sustainable technologies for energy efficiency and maximum comfort, within a stunning vertical green space for the enjoyment of all inhabitants of the building.
INNOVATIVE FACADE

Our design approach to the architecture includes highly innovative approaches to the building skin. Working with our European engineer and facade consultant, Werner Sobeck, we are investigating the latest approaches to high performance full glass facade systems include minimal structural glazing, double glass walls on some surfaces, exterior shading systems, and the finest coatings and hardware systems.
GROUND FLOOR PLAN - STATION PLACE
ICONIC ARCHITECTURE

The most important element of the design approach is the full integration of all architectural systems to create an iconic building on the Stamford skyline at this highly visible location at the juncture of the Stamford Train Station, Downtown, and the South End. The curved curtain wall and atrium form a delicate and shimmering transparent veil wrapping around and extending over the top of the building to partially enclose a dramatic roof garden overlooking the city and the waterfront. Our design responds to the unique qualities of the site, the City of Stamford, and the unique landscape of Connecticut to create a true sense of place and an iconic addition to the entire tri-state region.
