Klitten in mijn identiteit
Vanuit de zoektocht naar mijn identiteit, die gevormd is uit een etnisch gemengd huwelijk en zo een duale zijnde, gaf ik beeldend weer hoe dit tot uiting kwam in mijn haardracht. Ik belichtte daarbij de arfo haarcultuur en de gelaagdheid die erachter zit. De drie hoofdthema’s zijn: mijn wens tot conformiteit met de daarbijbehorende brandende chemicaliën en absurde schoonheidsidealen, de invloed van (post)kolonisatie waarbij Leopold II toegeëigend wordt en ten slotte de revolutie waarin afro haren aangemoedigd worden met de verwijzing naar de zwarte mensenrechtenbeweging waarbij de afro als politiek statement gebruikt werd. Door prints op het medium mode te plaatsen wordt mijn boodschap, die een nieuw perspectief is in mijn omgeving, letterlijk gedragen in de samenleving door middel van een rok, een dubbelzijdige afro haarjas, een hemd en T-shirts. Met dit project behaalde ik de hoofdprijs en de prijs van de stad Hasselt voor de Wanatoeprijs 2019.
Tangled up identity
In the quest of my identity, which is dual since I have mixed roots, I visualized how this translated into my hairstyles. I highlighted the afro hair culture and all its layers. The three main themes are: my wish for conformity with the use of chemical relaxers accompanied with absurd beauty standards, the influence of (post)colonialism whereby I appropriate Leopold II and lastly the revolution in which I celebrate afro hair and make references to the black human rights movements where the afro hairstyle was used as a political statement. By putting prints on the medium fashion I was able to wear my message, which is a new perspective in my environment, into society and get it out there. I made a skirt, a reversible afro hair coat, a shirt and T-shirts. With this project I won the grand prize and the prize for the city Hasselt for the Wanatoeprijs competition 2019.
